It isn't.

That was a candidate for red, surely?

That was the point being made by the radio guys.

Right.  Having seen it [unpopular_view]I don't think it's a red, possibly not even a yellow.[/unpopular_view] It should have been a foul.  the boro player is chasing a ball hard, doesn't deviate his run, as he sees Dawson is going to make the ball he does the only thing he can really, which is to jump over (what he might assume to be a sliding clearance).  There is a coming together. These things happen.

I've done worse.

It's a coward's challenge. He see Dawson coming and jumps into him, turning his back as he does to catch him high up with his shoulder.

I'm not convinced it was a red card, but it's a clear foul and yellow for me. Friend knew what he was doing.

I've watched it a bunch of times and I still can't make up my mind.

My read is he's committed to the ball, Dawson comes in quickly - last couple of strides he sees Dawson is going to make it first.  He turns his back to protect himself, and goes high because it looks like Dawson is going low. It's a foul all day, but I think it's an honest misjudgment.  Given his position and speed when he works out he's not going to make the ball, I'm not sure what else he can do. In approaching those sort of collisions you aim to get in the air, so you don't get a twisted knee or something. Both players are moving quick. I don't see any deviation or intentional attempt to play the man.

Although my eyesight is deteriorating these days, and I'm going a bit senile.

I think that's the thing that makes me side with you - I watch it at full speed and then slowed down, and I can't for the life of me figure out what else he's supposed to do there. He doesn't have time to pull out, if he stays on the ground or worse attempts a tackle he risks serious injury for one or both of them, and I don't see where or how he could change direction.

It is what the North Americans like to call a "bang-bang play". Slowed down and with the aid of multiple replays it's still hard to make a definitive ruling, as we're proving. At full speed a ref could make pretty much any decision and not be wrong.

To be honest, it looked like just one of those things to me. As said, Friend didn't exactly have options, other I suppose, than trying to get some sort of awkward tackle coming in and going down for a possible penalty. It looked like he could see what was about to happen and jumped to avoid it, turning as a natural instinct in that situation.
The inside of a Halex Three-Star table-tennis ball smells much like you'd expect it to

Nah clear red.  I saw it on I-follow and it looked nasty then.  Of course because I only saw it in real time and not a replay I got the details wrong but he jumped deliberately into him.  That was a cnut move.  Knew what he was doing.  He wasn't trying to get out of the way.  He was being a b@stard.  I hope some fcuker gets him in the return game.  Boro were obviously told to rough us up.  It didn't work as the ball wasn't really foisted into the air like Milwall who co-incidentally did the same to Villa over the weekend.  They were just plain nasty all game.

Fcuk those cnuts.  Pullis will probably get them up due to his nasty team being generally bigger and stronger than most.  We handled them reasonably well unlike Milwall who got their tactics spot on.

Footballing sides will probably cream us.  It will be interesting to see what Leeds do if they even have a team as most of them seem injured already.  Luckily for us they don't have a Forest sized squad.

Intent.

I have never seen it slowed down. I've now seen it many times at game pace, and I don't see a red.

You can see him turn on Dawson in real time.. but I didn't really see that before I looked for it. If the video does suggest intent or recklessness then fair enough.. deal with that.. but I'm not going to fault the ref for not seeing anything worthy of punishment on his one and only viewing. Hell.. look at the context.. if that situation is unfolding then the ref is 95% concerned with whether the defender is about to commit a foul.

The whole thing is an unintended consequence of the tough treatment of defenders who slide in. Once we wanted to get rid of reckless slides, now it feels like we're moving towards simply declaring all slides to be reckless. And thanks to the 'well there was contact' school of excising cheats.. any slide in or around the box is asking for trouble.

But if the defender is sliding then the attacker has somewhere to go (up) when he know he's lost the challenge. If defenders stay up there will be collisions and pain. Defenders, these days, are well advised to stay up if at all possible. Dawson could have slid cleanly and won the ball and *still* ended up conceding a penalty and getting sent off.. it's all down to the aptitude of the ref, and the behavior of the opponent. Attackers won't yield even when they know a winning tackle is coming at them in the box, because they can go down. They'll never been done for simulation so it's a free dive.
