The Daily Cut and Thrust / Re: This Europe Stuff
So, I saw Keir Starmer on the news this morning saying that when (if) May's deal fails, there should be a general election, which appears to be Labour's official position.

But ... that just means no deal doesn't it - no-one can think there could be a general election and a renegotiation before the end of March?

Nothing to prevent A50 being extended and under those circumstances I would expect that.
The Daily Cut and Thrust / Re: The Film Thread
Had to fill a 12 hour flight (CMB-LHR) and the film pickings were slim.

Unstoppable – I watched this thinking it was something else. It was a fairly run of the mill runway vehicle film, quite engaging and passed an hour and a half.

Inception – absolutely brilliant film, with a complex multi layered plot. Will probably watch again under better conditions to see WTF was actually happening at key points.

Margaret – I watched this on the recommendation of someone who had commented on the lack of films going out. If meet him again I’ll demand a refund, just dull.

It’s only the long term problems that are an indictment on Brexit itself.
Sorry if I've misunderstood; but you appear to be suggesting that any short to medium term harm caused by the process of exiting the EU is nothing to do with Brexit so long as things pan out not too bad in the long term. With all due respect that's bollocks. Obviously short term fiscal blips can be managed to a degree but what if, to use a worst case example, people die unnecessarily as a result. I'm not suggesting it's probable but it's certainly possible and it would be everything to do with Brexit.

The initial aim of the illegal immigrant is to seek asylum. If not please explain what their initial aim actually is.

Leaving aside the fact that it is not illegal to seek asylum; until now you've been adamant you are talking about those coming under a lorry etc. If that were the aim why would they go to that trouble, apart from those that can't afford the crossing (who would surely declare at the border anyway).

I would imagine it is far more likely they come to work, and are desperate enough to take work in the "black economy".

Of course I would have accepted, I would have been willing to fight for my country, unlike  you lefty appeasers who would  have seen no harm in uniting with Germany. Just as you’re advocating now

So you don't understand or accept the difference between asylum seekers and illegal immigrants.
You don't  understand or accept the difference between a peaceful collaboration with a group of neighbouring countries and aggressive occupation by an invader.
But you do align yourself with the nationalistic and xenophobic ideals of said aggressor.
I've never suggested you are stupid; but you have to admit that's a somewhat puzzling viewpoint.

Confusion is, was the enemy in the 30's and 40's Germans or was the enemy right wing fascism?

Rich is going with the former, you others with the latter.

In the 40's I guess the Venn diagram of Germans and Fascists had quite a big overlap area in the middle, hence the confusion.

Would we have gone to war with Germany if it were not for the right wing fascists? I'm no history buff;  but I've a strong hunch not.

Really glad you bunch of lefty let’s-join-Europe snowflake appeasers weren’t around in the 1930s, would have been a completely different outcome.

Makes you wonder why our fathers and grandfathers bothered.

Shameful is forgetting the lessons of the past, and once again accepting the rise of nationalism and the vilification of minorities.
It's ironic that you are on the side of the argument which you take pride in our forefathers having fought against.
