New York (again ( probably))

It's the girlfriend's 50th this week and we are going to New York to celebrate.
Trouble is that work is conspiring against me and I'm hardly going to have time to pack never mind do the last minute research I promised to do to find that elusive something special to do. So I'm throwing myself at the mercy of Talkback to suggest something interesting or different. I promise to try every suggestion*

Failing that she likes Justin Timberlake (yes I know) and he's performing there this week, and sitting through a couple of hours of that would get me many points; any ideas where I might go to get tickets for that?

Dress up warmly and walk the High Line, it's amazing.

Then head a few blocks north and take a wander round the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market, there's loads of cool stuff to buy there.

Avoid Times Square like the plague, it makes Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus look like quaint little authentic country villages.

If you want to visit a gallery, MOMA is good but the Guggenheim is better (and smaller, so you don't have to spend half a day there or miss half the exhibits).

If you want to be really cheesy romantic, go and find the bridge in Central Park where Ashford and Simpson filmed Solid. Top tip: when you find it, don't try and sing the song to her.

If you want to go up the Empire State Building, don't stand in the huge lines in the middle of the day. Go about 10pm (it's open until midnight) and there will be little or no queue.

Helicopter tour is amazing but not cheap (I think we paid about $300 each for about 20 minutes). For cheaper views of the famous sights, take the Staten Island Ferry for the best view of Lady Liberty (don't bother getting off at Staten Island though, there isn't much to do there) and go to Brooklyn Heights for the classic view of the Manhattan skyline.

For a laugh, go to Manhattan, stand in a crowded street, look up to the sky, point then yell as loudly as possible "Oh no, not again!"

Not been to NYC myself, but I've heard of a splendid place to take a loved one for a birthday or anniversary. Simply jump into a yellow cab, and ask to be taken to a bar called 'The Cock' post haste.

Alternatively, avoid it and go up the Rockfeller Center instead - which gives photo ops of both the Empire State Building to the south and Central Park to the north.

We went in September and I'd recommend both En (http://enjb.com/) and Stanton Social (http://stantonsocial.com/) for meals.

The revolving restaurant and bar at the marriott marquis hotel in Times Square is also great for views. Go around dusk. But it does mean going into times sq which as Russ says is pretty grim.
My current favorite restaurant is  this place http://boultonandwattnyc.com which is fab. It's lower east side which is a bit off the beaten track but there are loads of great bars all round that area, particular if you go south of east Houston st. It's very un touristy round there so it's probably the most genuine manhattan experience you'll get.

As Russ also says, the high line is great.

That's 'cos it's Alphabet City, which certainly used to be full of druggies and ne'er do wells.
Smith and Wolensky, 56th and third I think, is a great steakhouse.

What was the place we went to in the East Village? It wasn't exactly somewhere I'd recommend for a romantic meal, but it was great fun.

We went to here http://www.schillersny.com/ which is on the corner of Stanton and Norfolk in the Lower East Side. Haven't been there for a while.

when I was there the other week, I also went here: http://blueribbonfriedchicken.com/ It's like posh KFC. Winner.

Parts of it still are - but more around Ave B, C D and 1st to 5th. I know this because we work on 3rd St between B&C so have to walk past it all. South of East Houston though is all ok now.

The fcuking pizza!  It's ace and you will want more than one cheese slice.  It's cheap and lovely.  I could spend all weekend in New York just going to all the pizza joints.  Times Square is fcuking horrible.  The rest of New York is great.  Just remember the New York Giants are ace and the yankees, nets and Jets are sh!t.  Take in a Knicks game and yell art Carmelo to join the Bulls and then leg it to the stanton Island ferry for the only free think in New York.  I personally think the restaurants are pretty over rated apart from Pure Food and Wine in the village which has some pretty amazing raw food (and you would never know it).

Most of the fun of NEw Yawk is to roam around.  As stated by the Russ monster , the high line is rather splendid for a wander around.  Also please bear in mind by the time you get there the city may be out of it's snow emergency but I wouldn't count on it.

If running is bad for your knees try hanging out with Russ and Tricky for a night.

Was going to say exactly this. We got day and night tickets so went back up around 9pm after a meal when all the lights were on. Empire State makes a far better picture up high than the Rockefeller.

Times Square is tacky and garish (do not eat there - the food's horrible and overpriced) but I still maintain it's worth a look at night. I'd consider taking in a show too, if it's a special occasion. I'm no theatre luvvy by was blown away by the one we saw.

Most of the best parts of NYC are clearly off the beaten track of course. We enjoyed wandering around the Upper East Side, and randomly took in a big football game in a packed bar up there, despite not understanding the rules at all, and it ended up being one of the favourite things we did. Tenement Museum in the Lower East Side also really interesting in a part of town a million miles away from the tourist-packed Times Square.
